I remember her husband's delight (ALBERTO) when I congratulated him with a traditional Guatemalan expression.</p> <p>Since we have been exchanging quotations (Camus, Anatole France, Chatwin) please allow me to offer you these words from Ms Lahiri's last book, "UNACCUSTOMED EARTH":</p> <p>HE TURNED TO FACE HIS SLEEPING GRANDSON, THE LONG LASHES AND ROUNDED CHEEKS, REMINDING HIM OF HIS OWN CHILDREN WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG. <p>RdB,</p> <p>Como dueña de este blog tengo que decirte algo. Aunque sé que corro peligro que alguien me acuse de ser un adulador. Hay idiomas que son demasiados suaves, dejan un rastro de vaselina. Otros son como los cardos secos. Pinchan y, como te descuides, se te clavan. Suele ocurrir con el español. Es uno de sus encantos y parte de su genio.</p> <p>Envidio a aquellos compañeros que, como tú, pueden saltar de un idioma a otro. Lo utilizáis como las creams anti-UVA para la playa, con diferentes factores de protección.</p> <p>Una muestra, que me acabo de encontrar, navegando por las aguas bajo tu soberanía, nos confirma que tu bog es bastante especial. A estos datos me remito:</p> <p>Gracias a un novelista hindú, que vive en las estribaciones de los Himalayas, me entero hoy que ha fallecido en Nueva York el Leonardo da Vinci de las máquinas manuales de escribir de América.</p> <p>Y exploro el mundo detrás de esa noticia en compañía de un enigmático compatriota, con estrechas relaciones con familias de la Hoch-Adel de Alemania, conocedor de las desaparecidas "boiseries" del Taj de tu ciudad. Y un colega latinista francés , que ama los embutidos de Las Landas, pero aún más las joyas pata negra de Huelva o Salamanca. Y que te confiesa que es un explorador "manqué".</p> <p>Si viviéramos en una isla, tu blog podría ser una versión muy potente y, por supuesto, mucho más compleja que el "Magus" de John Fowles.
